What it reads
Ask for a plain review of this llms.txt.
llms.txt is a proposed standard for a plain text file at the root of a website, at /llms.txt, that gives AI tools a short, clean map of the site: what it is, and links to the pages that matter most. It was proposed by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI in 2024, and the format is described at llmstxt.org.
The file is written in Markdown. It starts with the site name as a heading and a one-line summary, then lists links in sections. A section called Optional holds pages a tool can skip when it is short on space.
# Site name > One-sentence summary of what the site offers. ## Docs - [Getting started](https://www.example.com/docs/start): Set up in five minutes ## Optional - [Privacy policy](https://www.example.com/privacy)
Not in any way that has been shown. Google has said it doesn't use llms.txt, and no major AI assistant has said it relies on the file to choose which sources to cite. Search interest in llms.txt has also been falling.
It is still cheap to add. Several documentation platforms generate one automatically, and some developer tools look for it. Think of it as a tidy summary for tools that ask for it, not a ranking factor. What decides whether AI search can use your pages is robots.txt, crawlable HTML, and content worth citing.
This generator does the first two steps for you.
Enter your site and we read its sitemap, skip anything robots.txt blocks, and pull the title and description of up to 20 pages.
Pages are sorted into sections such as Product, Docs, and Blog, with legal pages under Optional. Rename, reorder, or remove anything.
Save the file as llms.txt at the top of your domain, so it loads at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt, then check it here.
They are often mentioned together, but they do different jobs. You need robots.txt; llms.txt is optional.
| robots.txt | llms.txt | |

| Who reads it | Search engines and most AI crawlers | Some AI and developer tools, when they look for it |

A Markdown file at /llms.txt that summarises a website for AI tools: a heading with the site name, a short summary, and sections of links to the most useful pages. It is a proposal from llmstxt.org, not an official web standard.
llms.txt, with an s. Tools that look for the file request /llms.txt, so a file named llm.txt won't be found.
No. It is optional and Google doesn't use it. It is most useful for documentation and developer sites, where AI coding tools may read it. For most marketing sites, robots.txt and crawlable pages matter far more.
At the root of your domain, next to robots.txt, so it loads at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt. Serve it as plain text or Markdown.
No. llms.txt only describes your site. To allow or block AI crawlers such as GPTBot or ClaudeBot, use robots.txt. Our robots.txt tester shows which AI bots your file allows.
Some sites also publish /llms-full.txt, with the full text of their key pages in one file. It is part of the same proposal's ecosystem but optional. This generator builds the main llms.txt.
Yes. We save the URL you enter, the pages found, and any error for 12 months, with your IP address and approximate location, so we can improve the tool. Pasted files are checked in your browser and not saved. If you use the AI review, only the check results and counts are sent to our AI provider. See our privacy policy.
