TL;DR
In the backlinks vs. brand mentions debate, the honest answer is that they do different jobs for AI visibility: backlinks help your pages rank and get retrieved by the search systems AI tools rely on, while brand mentions shape what the web says about you, which is what AI answers summarize when they recommend products. Neither replaces the other. If AI tools never surface your pages, start with links and SEO; if they surface your category but name competitors instead of you, mentions on the sources they cite usually matter more. No AI vendor publishes how it weighs either, so treat any confident ratio with suspicion.
Backlinks vs. brand mentions: what each one is
A backlink is a clickable link from another site to yours. A brand mention is any place your company or product is named on another site, whether or not there is a link. The two overlap: a link inside an article that names your product is both. But plenty of valuable mentions carry no link at all, such as a forum answer recommending your tool, a review site listing, a podcast transcript, or a roundup that names you without linking.
For traditional search, the conversation has always centered on links, and for good reason. We made that case in why backlinks still matter for SaaS SEO. AI search optimization changes the question, because the output is no longer a ranked list of pages. It is a written answer that names some brands and leaves others out.
What is documented and what is inference
This topic is full of confident claims, so it helps to separate what the platforms have actually said from what practitioners, including us, infer.
Documented
- Google uses links as one of many signals in Search, and its link spam policies target links bought or sold to pass ranking credit, excessive link exchanges, large-scale guest posting campaigns with keyword-rich anchors, and automated link creation.
- Google says pages need no special treatment to appear in AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, so AI Overviews draw on the same index that links help pages rank in.
- ChatGPT search, Perplexity and similar tools run live web searches and cite the pages they use. OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawls pages for ChatGPT search.
- Language models learn from large amounts of public text, so what they know about a brand without searching reflects how that brand was discussed in the material they were trained on.
Inference
- Unlinked mentions probably matter more for AI answers than for rankings, because a model summarizing a category reads names in text, not link graphs.
- Mentions on pages that AI tools already cite for your category likely carry more weight than mentions on pages nobody retrieves.
- Consistent descriptions of your product across many independent sources likely make an answer more confident and more accurate about you.
No AI vendor publishes the weighting between links and mentions. If someone quotes you a precise ratio, ask how they could know it.
How backlinks support AI visibility
Links work mainly through the retrieval step. When an AI tool searches the web before answering, it can only use pages its search systems surface. Pages that rank well, for the main query and for the related sub-questions the tool searches behind the scenes, are the ones available to cite. Backlinks remain one of the main ways a SaaS site earns that ranking strength, especially on competitive commercial terms.
Links also help discovery. New pages on a well-linked site get crawled and indexed faster, which matters when you publish a new comparison page or update pricing and want answers to reflect it. And a link from a page that AI tools already cite does double duty: it passes authority and puts your brand inside a source the answers draw on.
Where links fall short is the recommendation itself. A strong link profile can get your pages retrieved and cited for facts, while the answer still recommends whichever competitor the wider web talks about more.
How brand mentions support AI visibility
When someone asks an AI tool for the best product in a category, the answer tends to reflect consensus: which names keep appearing across reviews, comparisons, community threads and articles, and how those sources describe them. Brand mentions feed that consensus directly, whether or not they link.
- Category association. Repeated mentions of your brand alongside your category and use cases help connect the two, both in retrieved pages and in what models learn over time.
- Corroboration. An answer is more likely to name a product that several independent sources describe consistently than one that only describes itself.
- Presence in cited sources. If a roundup that answers keep citing does not include you, no amount of on-site work puts you in that roundup.
- Accuracy. Third-party pages that describe your pricing, features or audience correctly reduce the chance of an answer getting you wrong.
The weakness of mentions is the mirror image of links: mentions with no link and no ranking page behind them do little for traditional search, and a mention on a page no search system surfaces may never be read by an AI tool at all.
Backlinks and brand mentions side by side
| Backlinks | Brand mentions | |
|---|---|---|
| Main effect on AI visibility | Helps your pages rank and get retrieved as sources | Shapes which brands an answer names and how it describes them |
| Main effect on classic SEO | Direct, a long-established ranking input | Indirect at most; Google has not confirmed unlinked mentions as a signal |
| Best fix for | Pages that never appear in results or AI sources | Being absent or misdescribed in recommendation answers |
| Where it should come from | Relevant, editorial sites with real readers | Sources your buyers read and AI answers already cite |
| How to measure it | Referring domains, rankings, organic traffic | Prompt tracking, share of voice, citation sources |
| Main risk | Manipulative link schemes that break Google's policies | Low-quality mentions on pages nobody reads or retrieves |
Which to prioritize: a practical decision framework
The right split depends on where you are losing today, and you can find that out in an afternoon.
- Run 15 to 20 real buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini. Our guide on how to measure AI visibility explains how to build and run that set.
- For each prompt, note whether your brand is named and which domains are cited.
- Check whether your own pages rank in Google for the main term and for the obvious sub-questions behind each prompt.
- If your pages do not rank and are rarely cited, put links and SEO first. AI tools cannot use pages they cannot find.
- If your pages rank and get cited for facts, but answers recommend competitors, put mentions first, starting with the third-party sources that appear as citations.
- If answers mention you but get details wrong, fix the facts on your own pages first, then correct them on the third-party sources being cited.
- Re-run the same prompts monthly and shift budget toward whichever gap is closing slowest.
Most SaaS companies end up doing both, weighted differently over time. Early on, links usually carry more weight because the site needs basic authority. Once core pages rank, mentions often become the bigger lever for AI answers. Our post on building a link building strategy that scales covers how to keep the link side growing without it becoming a volume game.
Where the two overlap, and how to get both from one placement
The best placements do both jobs at once: an editorial article on a relevant site that names your product in a meaningful context, describes what it does accurately, and links to a useful page. Three details make that work:
- Name the brand in the text, not only in the anchor. A sentence that says what your product is and who it is for is far more useful to an AI answer than a bare keyword anchor.
- Use consistent naming. Pick one way to refer to your company and product and use it everywhere, so mentions add up rather than splitting across variants.
- Respect link attributes. Links that were arranged rather than editorially given should carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" under Google's policies. Those attributes limit ranking credit, but the mention itself, and the context around it, is still readable by any AI tool that retrieves the page. That is our inference, not a documented rule, but it is why a nofollow placement on a well-cited source is not a wasted placement.

How Chung Digital splits the work between links and mentions
We run both as separate services because they need different target lists and different reporting. Our SaaS link building agency work focuses on guest posts and niche edits on relevant, vetted sites, with plans starting at $649/mo for 2 to 3 guest post placements. As a generative engine optimization agency, our Mentions service starts at $699/mo with a baseline AI visibility audit, tracking for 15 to 20 target prompts, and 2 to 3 brand mention placements a month aimed at the sources your category's answers draw on.
If you want both under one roof, the Authority tier of our Full SEO service includes backlinks and AI brand mention placements alongside technical and content work. All plans are month to month. We will tell you which gap to close first based on your prompt results, and we will not promise rankings or AI citations, because nobody honestly can.
Frequently asked questions
Do unlinked brand mentions help Google rankings?
Google has not confirmed unlinked mentions as a ranking signal, so treat any ranking benefit as indirect at best. Their clearer value is for AI answers and for buyers who see your name across sources they trust. They can also lead to links later, when an editor is asked to add one.
Do nofollow links help AI visibility?
They pass little or no ranking credit, but the page still names your brand. An AI tool that retrieves that page can read the mention and the context around it. A nofollow mention on a source that AI answers already cite can therefore still be worth having.
Does Domain Rating matter for AI visibility?
Domain Rating is a third-party metric, and Google does not use it. For AI visibility, whether a source is relevant, read by your buyers, and actually cited in answers for your category matters more than its score. DR is a rough filter, not a goal.
Should a new SaaS company start with backlinks or brand mentions?
Usually backlinks and foundational SEO first, because a site with little authority struggles to get its pages retrieved at all. Run a quick prompt check anyway. If buyers already ask AI tools about your category, early mentions on the sources those answers cite can be worth adding sooner.
Do review site listings count as brand mentions?
Yes, and for software categories they are often among the sources AI answers lean on. Keep your profiles complete and accurate, and encourage genuine reviews from real customers. Fake or incentivized reviews break most platforms' rules and undermine the trust you are trying to build.
How long do backlinks and mentions take to show an effect?
Both are measured in months rather than weeks. AI tools that search the live web can pick up a new mention once the page is indexed, while effects on a model's built-in knowledge wait for the next model update. Links usually take a few months to show up as ranking movement.
Can a single article give us both a backlink and a brand mention?
Yes, and those are often the most valuable placements. An editorial article that names your product in context, describes it accurately and links to a relevant page supports both rankings and AI answers. The description matters as much as the link.
Does it matter how our brand is named across the web?
Consistency helps. If your company is named three different ways, mentions are spread across variants rather than reinforcing one name. Pick a primary brand and product name, use it on your own site and in outreach, and correct major sources that get it wrong.
